This post reminds me of what Francis Chan talks about in his book, Crazy Love. Little statements and walls we put up that make us feel we have "enough" God.

"The Message" is really peculiar in that it is one man's writings, albeit useful. I would suggest something done by a committee like the NIV of ESV, etc. for real study of the Bible.

My list, by the way, is not a list of rules. These are statements that I believe are not biblical yet held by many still to be true enough to live by. If what I am suggesting is true, then you are bound to have some failure in your walk with Christ by upholding them!

"10 MORE statements that will help you FAIL as a Christian"
These are ten good rules that serve the purpose, but I am afraid I will never be able to keep them. Or, I am confident that I have again and again failed, trying to keep them. If this continues, I am rock bottom sure that I am forever doomed - to go to Heaven. In short, I believe the whole Bible, with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone that was thrown away. We, today, however, need to look for principles, not peculiarities, when reading the Bible.
There are sane translations, like The Message by E. Peterson.
Then there are others, like "The Evidence Bible", condoned by jailed preacher Mr. Kent Hovind. Did he miss something, something about paying taxes, maybe? Or are we more concerned about being dino doctors?

#5 The point is that there is NO biblical prohibition against drinking alcohol. Period. You will not find it. We have to use judgment with even food since too many Christians are FAT and do not care for their bodies. This does not make food a tool of sin since it could lead to gluttony. No. Wine or other things that lead to the sin of being drunk (Ephesians 5:18) does not make alcohol a sin and the Bible does not says otherwise. Being DRUNK leads to more sin, NOT drinking wine. People do not parse this verse correctly and try to force it to say what it is not saying.

Legalism is when we lower Gods standard to our level (such as might lead to) and make rules or law that God does not make. This is what is under the FAIL—legalism kills our walk by giving us a false sense of righteousness. This is the nut of #5

#1?? Romans 12:1-2 is the classic example of holistic life change! We present our bodies, our mind is renewed and we are CHANGED. It is a heresy of practical theology to deny that God has given us the choice, power and opportunity to become more and more like Jesus by the gift of new life we have that was purchased on the cross.

#2 is for those that in Hebrews forsake the assembly and excuse it because of various reasons...today the new one is that we can just do it on our own

#8 is for those who go to church rather than see church as their family...

two different people, unless they say they do not need church while attending?

AWESOME LIST! AWEsome list. awesome. awesome!

I especially like #8 "I 'go' to church" - the Church is not a place you go to, it's something you're a part of.

And of course the drinking thing is one of the more challenging ones on this list. I agree w/ you absolutely. That and smoking. And I'd even say cussing, but that's hard to defend.

One thing, can you explain 2 in light of 8? They appear to contradict each other only somewhat.
