No, but I am not mixing the comparisons that way. I was not saying it was ok, I just think people are perhaps missing the larger connection. I don’t think it is hypocritical to point out to the Religious Right that they tossed out the window one of their core values the minute it didn’t line up along party lines in a way that was advantageous for them.

I think it would have better to address it that way directly, instead of coming in sideways using McCain as an object lesson. However, I think it would be very disingenuous for someone who is decidedly right wing to go around pointing it out. That person would have little moral authority to do so.

The fact is that there IS a slam as you say and McLaren said he was above that. Apparently not. That had not integrity whatsoever.

I think the bigger slam was to the religious right in general, who have used “family values” often as a club to beat up opponents with, yet dismiss those values when it doesn’t fit their political ends.

Good thoughts Rich. I don’t think he is becoming an opposite of Dobson…but he is lurking towards that direction I think. I’ll be interested to see how his involvement with the Obama campaign plays out in the next 3 months.

I don’t believe God’s plan is ever for divorce, but where is the compassion. Who knows where McCain’s head was during those years following his inprisionment. I can’t begin to know or understand the circumstances surrounding his divorce. My goodness, that was a low blow.

Billy…I will not bash McLaren (neither are you), who’s writings I admit reading and respecting. It is just this seems off for a pastor to be part of a “typical” political ad while trying to say their movement is “loving” in this case. Perhaps a bad error?
